Jan Buddy is Mattes' cousin and also one of his biggest admirers. Nearsighted and possessing a good sense of humor, he imitates Mattes and follows in his footsteps in the Möwenluft company in Hamburg.

Mattes von Sprotte and little Lotti

With little Lotti, whom he meets by chance on his way to his flock of seagulls in Hamburg, he experiences many exciting adventures along the world's coastlines. They are always in pursuit of Lotti's father, whom they narrowly miss each time. The whole flock of seagulls, of course, helps as much as they can. Seagulls are very social animals and always stick together.
